9th January is a celebration of defeat and genocide
During military parades in Serbia, soldiers usually carry war flags from the First and Second World Wars and the Kosovo War. The flags from the Kosovo war are “astonishing” because the practice with military parades is to display “flags of victory”, not flags of defeats. Because the armed forces of the dictatorship of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the criminal regime of Slobodan Milosevic lost the war against the NATO pact and disgraced Serbia, presenting it as an arrogant, primitive, and uncivilized society during the 1990s and early 2000s.
The same can be said about the celebration of the Serb Republic (Republika Srpska) entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Serb Republic’s “national day” on January 9 is more or less manifested as a fascist parade and symbolism. This illegal and shameful holiday is actually a glorification of defeat and misunderstanding of history for several reasons.
As construction and the administrative-territorial unit, the Serb Republic was established based on the model of ethnic separatism developed during 1990–1991 in Croatia when the Serb Republic of Kraina (Republika Srpska Krajina) was created through cooperation between Serb nationalists in Croatia and Serbia. The idea of the Serb Republic was conceived from the very beginning to be created through killings, expulsions, and destruction. From the start, it meant a moral, legal, and political defeat because the international community supported Croatia, Bosnia, and Herzegovina due to attacks, aggression, and crimes committed by the regime in Belgrade.
From these examples, it has to be concluded that neither the Serb Republic (RS) nor the Serb Republic of Kraina (RSK) was “people’s ideas” but elite constructions created by individuals at high civilian and military positions. The ideas of RS and RSK were accepted by most adult Serbs, among other things, because the rise of nationalism among the ethnic communities in Yugoslavia created an atmosphere of fear, hatred, and hysteria where it was harder to stay rational, peaceful, and reasonable at the individual level. It was far easier to believe in myths, mistrust, and conspiracy theories.
So, RS was never conceived to be a society ruled by reasonable laws, civic consciousness, and democratic openness but was conceived as an ethnocratic, corrupt and primitive society. The case and history of the RSK also point to another important fact: the RSK was defeated militarily in 1995 for several reasons, not just because the Croatian army was better trained, more capable, and more determined. One additional reason for the defeat of the RSK is that the RS, under the leadership of criminal Radovan Karadzic, cooperated with the autocrat and nationalist wartime president of Croatia Franjo Tudjman, even though Karadzic promised to “Great Serbs” in Knin that he would defend the RSK.
Thereby, the celebration of January 9 is also a celebration of the defeat of the RSK, Croatia’s victory, and the myth of “Serbian unity”. RS itself did not end up as RSK, but it was close to happening because the combined forces of the Croatian Army, Bosnia based Croatian Defense Council, and Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Sarajevo government) defeated the Republika Srpska Army in several places in the northern and western parts of BiH during the spring, summer and autumn. that it was a matter of time before Banja Luka would end up like Knin, the former capital of RSK.
“Fortunately” and paradoxically, RS was saved in practice by NATO, the USA, and the EU, which threatened to bomb the position of the BiH Army, demanded an end to the war, and the introduction of the Dayton Peace Agreement. Thereby, January 9, is also a celebration of how RS lost militarily and was saved from “enemies of the Serbian people”.
Last but not least, it should be borne in mind that RS was not intended to be eternal. In fact, the ideas around RS during 1991 and 1992 were that RS would be more like a temporary territorial-administrative unit that would later become part of “Greater Serbia” or as the gangster and war criminal Zeljko Raznatovic Arkan called “Junajted Stejts of Srbia”. But Serbia is smaller today than in 1991, it had fought three times during the 1990s and lost three times. Thereby, January 9 is also a celebration that Serbian nationalists lost the war, impoverished and humiliated Serbs in Croatia and BiH, and that Serbia is territorially small and quite corrupt.
Due to the stated reasons and facts, those who really celebrate RS believe both myths and misconceptions that they celebrate some kind of victory and “patriotic war” which resulted in genocide, crime, rape, poverty, and destruction. In fact, the celebration of RS Day is a celebration of the military, economic and moral defeats. Many have not yet realized that Serbian nationalists and supporters of that policy lost the war and inflicted enormous damage on Croats, Bosniaks, Albanians, and others and Serbs.
