Sharing Green Economy — A case for green cryptocurrencies and decentralized climate actions

How should the USA develop regarding ecology, climate change, and sustainability? Such questions have been discussed since the 1970s and, to a greater extent, since the 1990s and 2000s discussions on global warming, climate transformation, and the world’s future. Discussions are currently occurring in connection with President John Biden’s State of the Union speech and the upcoming presidential election in 2024.
Left-wing, green, and progressive political actors have mainly driven most ideas and proposals. A new book called “Sharing Green Economy” by Mike Duwe focuses on uniting more people and different proposals to circumvent the left-right scale’s economic conflicts and the prevailing political polarization in the country. The author argues, among other things, that the development of the United States is about promoting more decentralization and innovation, as well as interpersonal and local collaboration in smaller communities.
Duwe’s book is exciting to read because it raises current and modern ideas that are not always mentioned in discussions on climate issues. For example, Duwe advocates using green cryptocurrencies and refers to existing communities and initiatives that use such currencies for food production, social projects, and eco-villages. Furthermore, Duwe believes that climate change is about changing the philosophical view of work, where, according to him, more people need to have different types of green and meaningful rewarding activities in everyday life.
Key concepts in the book on the green sharing economy are cooperation, decentralization, and community. Duwe’s texts are also characterized by optimism and encouragement for local management of environmental problems and that the negative consequences of climate change should be managed through more democratic and constructive relationships between people as well as between residents and authorities. His suggestions include better cooperation between the federal and local levels.
The book deals with proposals for a new green deal focusing on large public investments in climate change. At the same time, parts of the book can be seen as very controversial and even more unrealistic. For example, Duwe believes that the United States should declare a “War on climate change,” which may sound wrong and counterproductive, considering previous phrases and results regarding “wars” against drugs, terrorism, and human smuggling. At the same time, more examples that show previous problems with such politics are missing, as in the case of South Korea’s green deal and the risks that exist when politicians promise, and voters expect impossible results.
Sharing Green Economy is a very captivating and thought-provoking read on how climate change processes can be done by uniting centralized authorities and institutions with decentralized ones such as cooperatives, communities, and eco-villages. It is evident in the book that Duwe has practical experience as a green entrepreneur who wants more Americans to collaborate and care about each other instead of hating and mistrusting each other. Therefore, the book ends, among other things, with the call to the reader that if one’s land is destroyed by methane, there is a market solution for it. In this way, Duwe shows how markets, communities, and public institutions are needed to make the United States an ecological role model globally.
